Slow-Cooker French Onion Soup

Classic French onion soup adapted for the slow cooker and topped with cheesy broiled French bread.

Ingredients
  

Soup

  • 3 cups onions sliced, about 3 medium
  • 3 tablespoons margarine or butter melted
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 4 14 1/2-ounce cans ready-to-serve beef broth

Cheesy Broiled French Bread

  • 8 French bread slices 1 inch thick
  • 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese shredded, 3 ounces
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese grated or shredded

Instructions
 

  • In a 5- to 6 1/2-quart slow cooker, mix onions and melted margarine or butter.
  • Cover and cook on High 30-35 minutes, until onions begin to brown slightly around the edges.
  • Mix flour, Worcestershire sauce, sugar and pepper. Stir flour mixture and broth into onions. Cover and cook on Low 7-9 hours or High 3-4 hours, until onions are very tender.
  • Prepare cheesy broiled French bread and place one slice on each bowl of soup. Serve immediately.
